We got up early to beat the crowds and got over to the centre of the Diocletian Palace. We climbed up the bell tower for some panoramic views and then came down and sat in the cathedral while the organist practiced. It is a beautiful church.

Later in the day we headed out to walk up the Marjan hill which you can see in pictures taken from the bell tower. Our host said there would be no trouble finding the stairs that would take us there....right! So we started out walking along the Riva but came upon the Mestrovic Gallery. We asked inside about the stairs and were told that we must have passed them. We had wanted to see this museum after visiting the hill so we decided to reverse the order and go into the gallery.
Mestrovic was a renowned Croatian sculptor and architect of the 20th century. The gallery is set in his house overlooking the Adriatic. His work is amazing with such detail, especially on the hands and feet of his subjects.

Our ticket also gave us entry to his church where the walls are lined with his wood reliefs of scenes from the bible and his great crucifix behind the altar.

From there we went back looking for the stairway to Marjan. Finally we came to some stairs, by some I mean a multitude. Straight up for quite some time when we came to the end but we weren't at the top. Mary asked a local if these were the steps to Marjan. "No, no, these are new stairs, you want the old stairs at the bottom of this hill." So, back down the hill to the old stairs and then all the way back up. I think there was talk of beer at this point.

Later we walked back down and found a restaurant that had been recommended to us, Uje. All organic foods were on the menu. We started with their crackers and olive paste.

Then we had their bruschetta.

Finally we shared the entree of hake fish with chard.

And of course, wine.

Later in the evening we went to Zinfandel, a wine bar with live music. They do love their western music. Especially Dr. Hook's song "Living Next Door to Alice". Usually accompanied by a chorus from the crowd...."Alice, who the fuck is Alice?!"
