After the Night We Split

May 10, 2016
After our night in Split we headed out for the city of Omis which is actually on the mainland. In Omis we walked through town to the Cetina River where a boat was waiting to take us up the river to Radman's Mill.

This had long been a working grain mill but has now been transformed into a restaurant and a recreational area with rafting and zip lines in the area. It was a tranquil trip up the river on an overcast day creating excellent reflections in the water.

On our arrival at the mill we were treated to some local wine and fritter snacks. We were also shown how their bread is made and got to sample some as well.

We got a bit of rain on the way back and then strolled through the town. Omis was known for its pirates in the 13th and 14th centuries. They were the most feared pirates of the Adriatic. They would attack trade ships at the mouth of the Cetina River and then get away up the river where the larger ships couldn't follow. The town also has a fortress high on a hill with lots of stairs(don't they all) and we were able to hike up and get some good views before our boat pulled out.

We returned to the island of Brac but this time on the east side to the town of Pučišća, known for its production of limestone. Limestone from this area was used in the Dioclesian Palace in Split as well as columns of the White House. We were able to visit the famous stone mason school where the students were doing some amazing work.
Later a small group of us walked out to the limestone quarry and then back into town.

We sat down and soaked our feet in the Adriatic, which was plenty, and then joined up with another couple and hiked up to a view of the town. Later we went down to the restaurant, Lado, and had their meat platter for two, which the four of us couldn't finish, and each couple got the "big salad". Mary had tried to order the Caprese salad but the waiter shook his hand and said, "No....you don't want that."

Tomorrow we have our longest boat trip, seven hours sailing time.
