I Am a Rock, I am an Island

Today we started with a walking tour of Dubrovnik as part of our cruise package. The crowds were down a bit as there was no big cruise ship in the harbour. Our guide was good, very knowledgeable and engaging in her delivery. We learned about the 4 main fears of the citizens that helped shape the city: lack of water, lack of food, attack from enemies and fear of disease. We were shown the well that was the terminus of their water system, the extra wide street that allowed the pack animals to get to the grain mill, the high walls that surround the city and the enclosure outside the walls that was used to quarantine the visitors for 40 days before being allowed inTo the city.

After the tour we had free time to wander and we found a little shop that specializes in Dubrovnik patterns based on traditional costumes with hand stitched runners and mats. Here's an example of part of a costume.

Later we made our way back to the boat and started off on the cruise, first stop Mljet Island.

Mljet Island is the first national park of Hrvatska(Croatia) and it is based around two lakes, Big Lake and Small Lake. We were told that in the summer the lakes can reach up to 32 degrees Celsius, not today, though.

Back to the boat for our first of two dinners on the boat and then cruising off to Kocula where we will spend the night.
