Gaudi, All Day, Every Day

Had a bit of indecision today....I know...this is Mary I'm talking about! Thought about a day trip to Montseratt but our hotel desk clerk said it would be two hours there by train and two hours back. So over breakfast we decided to stay in Barcelona and do some more exploring. It's a very walkable town and the transit is great, as long as you make sure you're on the line with the right terminus station...lost another two trips off our ticket by not double checking this.

We did a bit of exploring on the waterfront before catching the metro to the Padrera, the house designed by Antoni Gaudi. When I say house, it's been turned into more of an apartment complex/museum but originally it had been built for one individual. Like the Sagrada Familia, it is very unique. We started at the roof, which takes its shape from the attic, designed to help insulate the rest of the building. There are 12 chimneys which look more like something from Star Wars. The attic is built on a series of arches and the interior walls of the apartments could actually be moved at the whim of the tenant because none of them were supporting walls.

After our tour we found the Ciudad Condal, a restaurant recommended by our hotel desk clerk. We had an assorted tray of tapas including mussels, prawns, anchovies, deep fried potato nuggets and small green peppers...very good. We then did a bit of a stroll through the Gotic area, including a stroll through an open food market where we saw the Spanish tradition of eating all parts of their animals.

Tomorrow we hope to do the third Piece of Gaudi architecture....Parc Guell, but first we will start at the Picasso Museum. Lots to do!
