Last Day in Nice

Continue to have problems with connections and energy on my part. Today we caught the bus up to Vence (after mailing off our second box of stuff, mostly clothes we no longer need, in order to make more room for the new stuff). It was a tortuous, stifling, hour long bus trip but Vence was worth the trip. We finally had our first socca, a regional type of flat bread, at the Vence market. Then we hiked around the old town and finally settled in at La Pigeonnier for lunch, where we had the Plat du Jour, moules(mussels) and some excellent frites. Half way through the meal a girl tried to squeeze past our table, knocking over our rose wine (gasp) which the knocked over the lid holding the empty shells on Mary....luckily we salvaged most of the wine and Mary had only a slight eau du moules smell for the rest of the day.

Later we bussed back to St. Paul where we visited the Fondation Maeght, a modern art museum in beautiful surroundings. We were able to view Chagall's "La Vie" and we found an interesting Swedish artist named Erik Dietman who mixed lots of humor and death in his art. We especially liked the piece titled "Lawrence of Arabia Writing Home", I'll include a picture. Later we trekked to the cemetery. It was moving to visit Chagall and his second wife, Vava's, gravesite overlooking the beautiful countryside.

Then another long bus ride, a walk along the whole of the beach promenade in Nice and a final dinner in Old Nice.

Tomorrow we head for Arles.

  1. Speaking of parcels, we just got the first one. It beat the postcard by a day.
