Hot, Hot, Hot

Got up early and tried to get into the beach at Mauna Kea but didn't get there before the last pass was given out.  Maybe another day.  So we went to plan B which was Hapuna Beach, not a bad second option.  Lots of white sand and we got there before the crowds.  Tried some boogie boarding which I've discovered I'm not very good at....only had one complete flip over the board and no broken bones.  Even got Mary on the board for a couple of tries, she' a natural!
Later we went to check out Spencer Park, just north of Hapuna.  Pleasant little beach with good sand. While there we dropped into the national historic site of Pu'ukohola Heiau.  A heiau is a temple and this one is built on the Hill of the Whale.  It was built in 1791.  The heiau had to be built with water worn lava rocks according to a prophecy.  So the workers formed a 25 mile long human chain and passed them hand to hand from the valley of Pololu to the top of Pu'ukohola.  If a rock was dropped it would be left because it would not we worthy of the heiau.  There's a picture of Mary trying to pick up one of the rocks used for the floor.  This is where Kamehameha came to full control of the island of Hawaii after he had his cousin killed.  Soon after this he united all the island under one rule.  You didn't mess with Kamehameha.
