So today we had to buy a train ticket for our trip to Ljubljana on Saturday. Until now we had not used the Metro. But we were given directions to the train station and it all seemed easy enough. (On the weekend we were in Vancouver using transit and there once you buy a ticket you have 90 minutes of travel.). We quickly got to the train station and picked up our tickets. We still had lots of time so we validated our recently used transit pass, zipped down the escalator, hopped on a train and we're back in no time. All was good until we tried to exit. Apparently Budapest is not the same as Vancouver. So, after a 16000 forint fine (about $75) and a visit to the ticket office to register a complaint, we walked away humbled having been reminded of an important lesson...never assume anything when traveling in a foreign country.
The rest of the day went well. We bought tickets for a ballet performance and then stopped at the Book Cafe, an art nouveau decorated Cafe in a book store, where we had a hot drink and dessert. We hopped on a bus and went to the Buda side with a visit to the castle, St. Matthias Church and the Fisherman's Bastion which gives a great view back to the Pest side.
We walked back to our apartment with a stop to eat a cheese langos, a quick change of clothes and then off to the Opera House to attend the "Sleeping Beauty" ballet. A beautiful building and a great performance.
