It rained heavily this morning, Jan. 7, so we decided on a road trip. So we thought we'd try Porto Marie, not Sint Michel. We hoped to see flamingos on the way near Willibrordus (or Williwood as called by the locals. It was a fairly long drive with only one wrong roundabout turn and we made it to the salt flats and got a look at some flamingos. We then drove on and found Nena Sanchez' gallery. She is a Curacaon self taught artist whose gallery is in Jan Kok's landhuis where around 1860 he had 100 slaves working in his salt production but the actual landhuis dates back to the early C18. Mary was able to find two small prints. From there we went on to "Williwood" and stopped at their cathedral. Then we took the fork in the road that supposedly led to Porto Marie....the road less travelled? We didn't last very long. It was paved, I think, but it was very rough so we turned around and took the other fork which took us to a gated resort and residence called Coral Estates. Very beautiful and very expensive.
Back to Willemstad and an early dinner in Punda at The Grilling. We each had a margarita with curacao and a plate of mussels au gratin with garlic bread. It was in the same area as another restaurant we tried out and the location is right on the water, even splashing up on us a bit when a big wave hit. From there we came back to our place and watched the Seahawks beat the Lions. All is right in the world.
